As a faculty member in the Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education and Chair of the Urban Education doctoral program at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, I endorse the Centipede Math curriculum being submitted by Harvey Shropshire for consideration. I applaud his efforts to push math instruction beyond the status quo to make sure CMS students achieve and reach their full potential.

I speak on behalf of the effectiveness of Centipede Math. Centipede Math has several facets that are effective in ensuring students can experience success in math. In particular, I can see the benefit and impact that it can have on Exceptional Children.
I have taught Inclusion Math 1 for 9 of my 10 years of teaching at Vance High school. The Centipede itself is a great tool that helps to indirectly teach students their timetables. The ultimate benefit is how the Centipede can be used to solve computations involving fractions.

I have used Centipede Math with a group of 3rd graders who were below grade level in math and were able to experience success in math due to the strategy and the specific vocabulary that is used. Centipede Math naturally provides students with the opportunity to recognize and make use of patterns amongst the numbers. The Centipede is a great model of mathematics that I would recommend for any student.

Sincerely,
